Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) Calculator
Estimate your Basal Metabolic Rate – the number of calories your body needs at rest to maintain vital functions.
How to use this calculator
Select the gender option and unit system, then enter age, weight, and height. Select Calculate to estimate basal energy use in kcal per day. The Metric height field uses centimeters: enter 175 for a height of 1.75 m. Check the unit labels rather than copying an entry from another calculator that uses separate meters and centimeters fields.
WHAT BASAL ENERGY MEANS
Basal metabolic rate refers to energy used to support essential functions under resting conditions. This page provides an equation-based estimate from your entries, not a direct measurement of oxygen use or metabolism. A result expressed per day describes a 24-hour quantity.
A UNIT-INTERPRETATION EXAMPLE
A hypothetical result of 1,500 kcal/day would equal an average of 62.5 kcal per hour when divided by 24. That conversion explains the unit; it does not mean the body uses an identical amount every hour or that 1,500 kcal is the right food intake for a particular person.
BMR IS NOT TOTAL DAILY EXPENDITURE
Daily movement, exercise, and other energy costs make a whole day different from the resting quantity. Do not treat this BMR estimate as a complete daily calorie budget or automatically subtract an activity estimate from it to set a food allowance.
Predictive equations have individual error and may not fit children, pregnancy, illness, or unusual body composition. Recheck inputs when a result looks surprising, and use the same units and method when comparing scenarios. A qualified health professional can help interpret energy needs in the context of adequate nutrition, activity, and health.
