Pace Calculator
Determine your average pace per kilometer based on your run time and distance.
How to use this calculator
Choose kilometers or miles, enter a positive distance, and enter elapsed time in hours, minutes, and seconds. Select Calculate to find average pace per chosen distance unit. Use the unit matching the recorded distance; entering a distance in miles while selecting kilometers describes a different run.
FORMULA AND WORKED EXAMPLES
Average pace = total elapsed time ÷ distance. A 5 km run completed in 30 minutes has a pace of 6:00 per km. A 10 km run completed in 50 minutes has a pace of 5:00 per km. The lower number represents less time per kilometer and therefore a faster average speed.
MINUTES AND SECONDS ARE NOT DECIMAL MINUTES
A pace of 5:30 means five minutes and thirty seconds, which equals 5.5 minutes. It does not mean 5.30 decimal minutes. When checking by hand, convert the complete time to seconds first, divide by distance, then convert back to minutes and seconds.
PACE VERSUS SPEED
Pace gives time per distance; speed gives distance per time. A pace of 6:00 per km corresponds to 10 km/h because 60 minutes divided by 6 minutes per kilometer equals 10 kilometers. Keep kilometers and miles separate when comparing the figures.
Use elapsed time if you want stops included, or moving time if you intentionally exclude them, and state which measure you used. The result is an average; it does not describe every split, hill, or interval. It is not a prediction that the same pace can be maintained over a longer distance. Terrain, weather, stops, and measurement accuracy affect comparisons.
